Before the Time of Paper Diapers

When we were first married we lived in a house without water. We did have running water – you took two buckets and ran to the ditch to fill them and then ran back to the house. We had a wood and a coal stove so you carried fuel in and ashes out. We had two boys real fast so we had two in diapers at the same time. Roylee had to wash cloth diapers the hard way. Now they call them baby bombers. There is a reason for all this B.S. -- you’ll understand why Roylee was so mad when you hear the rest of the story.
I always rode a horse to irrigate. I had been out quite a while so I stopped by the house to get a drink.  There was a ditch near the

house with a lot of grass on the bank. So instead of tying up my horse, I just dropped the reins so he could graze. Roylee had just finished washing three dozen diapers and she  had  hung  them  on the clothes line that crossed the ditch. We were in the house when we heard a hell of a racket. The horse had grazed under the clothesline and caught the clothesline on the saddle horn.
I hope you can guess what kind of a wreck this caused. The horse went through and over five fences and believe it or not, he didn’t cut himself bad, but he sure raised hell with the diapers. Roylee wasn’t a happy camper and after that the horse didn’t even like you to blow your nose with a handkerchief while you were on him.                                    Excerpt from book
